A series of one-sided video talks are played to achieve this. And it is executed tastefully.
The trick is that Telling Lies is a highly specialized experience in which the player is the protagonist and must figure out and reveal the entire plot in their way. Therefore, there is no need to reveal plot details or explain anything that the player should discover for themselves.
