100 Thieves, a North American esports organization, has announced plans to develop its own video game. To do this, the company appointed former Telltale Games CEO Pete Hawley as its Chief Product Officer. Hawley intends to establish a development studio and manage the project.
According to a LinkedIn post by 100 Thieves President & COO John Robinson, the game, currently titled ‘Project X,’ would be developed in collaboration with the company’s content creators and esports professionals. Robinson also stated that the organization plans to hire engineers, designers, and artists for the project.
The COO also stated that the endeavor is the “largest bet” that 100 Thieves has ever made as a company. Furthermore, despite the difficulties of creating a game, he expressed enthusiasm for the project. Further information and intentions have not been revealed.
Along with Robinson’s LinkedIn post, 100 Thieves established social media accounts for the new initiative. Its Twitter account has almost 30,000 followers as of this writing. 100 Thieves is not the world’s first esports organization to house a gaming company. INTZ established the Apollo Games Lab in Brazil with professionals who had previously worked with Vivo Keyd in the ‘Keyd Studio.’ However, ‘Initiative X’ appears to be a far more extensive project than those undertaken by Brazilian organizations.
This is a massive step by 100 Thieves. It’s always intriguing to see how esports organizations try to expand income opportunities. Still, it’ll be even more interesting to see how the gaming company handles the investment and obstacles of producing a game.
