FC Barcelona, a Spanish football club, has confirmed its official debut in the League of Legends competition, with a team expected to compete in the Superliga in 2022. While the organization has yet to formally release a lineup for its League of Legends team, with the Superliga scheduled to resume in January, we may expect to learn more about who will be playing.

The reason for Barcelona’s selection of League of Legends as its next esport was indicated in the official press release, “By participating in this tournament, FC Barcelona is reaffirming their commitment to esports, a strategic sector in which they initially entered two years ago with the goal of establishing a high profile.”
Barcelona has rosters in eFootball, Rocket League, and Hearthstone, so this isn’t their first step into esports. The football club hopes to diversify its esports footprint with this new team, with the goal of bringing “the Barça brand to nations such as the United States of America or China.”
