Wizards unite! Portkey Games and Zynga welcome you back to Hogwarts for an imaginative retelling of the epic Harry Potter saga. Unlike some other intellectual properties, the Harry Potter universe does not produce that many licensed mobile games – but when it does, it is guaranteed to be delightful!
Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells was announced a couple of months back by Zynga to much fanfare and the studio’s creative director even referred to it as one of the their “biggest” games ever created. If you are familiar with mobile games, then you know that Zynga is responsible for some of the most popular, intricate casual games out there, from Farmville to Word With Friends. With such a bold statement, one cannot help but wonder what potential Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells might hold.
Well, let me tell you that Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells totally lives up to the high expectations. This Match 3 puzzler is a wonderful reintroduction to the splendid Harry Potter universe, which never gets old. Whether you are a fan of this blockbuster franchise or not, you can at least appreciate the creativity and the care that go into crafting this game. Harry Potter fans will get the added perks of being able to trace back to the very first Harry Potter book and hop along on the epic journey once again.
Like the Candy Crush Saga series, Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells is a level-by-level Match 3 game. Each level has different objectives and your goal is to complete those objectives with the limited moves you are given. What makes this game stand out from the plethora of Match 3 games on mobile out there is how well it is integrated into the Harry Potter universe. Not only is the storyline cleverly tied into the gameplay, but the Match 3 obstacles, power-ups, and tasks are also all incredibly creative and thoughtful.
Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells also introduces spells, which can be deployed by matching bubbles on the board. These spells can also be upgraded when you level up or complete side tasks. This is a smart way of bringing in the magic aspect of the franchise into the usually burned-out Match 3 genre. All these features, along with other themed features such as customizable avatar, character events, and magical creatures, help the game remain engaging and exciting at all times. This proves that in 2020, it is still possible to spice up the Match 3 genre – other studios just need to try a little harder.
Outside the realm of the gameplay, Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells also excels. The visuals are spectacular, with gorgeous animations and breathtaking special effects, the game really does look like a high-budget animated feature. The sound elements are equally well-done and effectively add some energy to the game. As for the in-app purchases system, it is perfectly designed and does not feel too aggressive.
