It’s Halloween and you are excited to go celebrate at a festive party with your best friend. But when the Grim Reaper himself comes out to claim your friend’s soul, you have no choice but to rescue your friend and escape death yourself. Halloween Stories: Defying Death is the latest Halloween-themed game from Elephant Games!
It’s nice to have a creepy-themed game for a change, especially since it’s already so close to Halloween. Following Invitation, Black Book, and Horror Movie, Elephant games returns with the series’ fourth installment. Although the storyline in Defying Death is not particularly groundbreaking, the Grim Reaper mythology is interesting enough to drive the game forward and offer some thrills. As for the horror factor, Halloween Stories: Defying Death doesn’t compare to truly frightening titles like True Fear: Forsaken Souls, but the game’s festive flair and campiness definitely have their audience.
Visually, Halloween Stories: Defying Death is stunning. The graphics are of high-quality and the dark atmosphere adds some suspense to the game. In a way, this looks like a game from the famous Haunted Hotel series, but with more supernatural elements and a Halloween flavor. However, the production is far from perfect. There are moments in which the cutscenes look unfinished and the character animations feel very awkward. Elephant Games is more than capable of addressing these issues if they choose to, as they have proven with other, more flawless-looking games in the past.
I don’t think anyone expects Halloween Stories: Defying Death to deliver top-tier gameplay, as the series has successfully branded itself as pure Halloween fun. Still, it is nice to see that there are more than cookie-cutter tasks and mundane puzzles in this game. While the gameplay doesn’t bring anything totally new to the table, there is a conscious effort to elevate this game above your typical HOPA. This is most evident through puzzles that are creatively designed and integrated with thematic Halloween elements.
Halloween Stories: Defying Death is not a must-play, but its three and a half hours runtime is indeed not boring. The Collector’s Edition also comes with a handful of other goodies – a bonus chapter, a strategy guide, wallpapers, concept art, soundtracks, achievements, collectibles, morphing objects, replayable hidden object scenes and puzzles, and jigsaw puzzle.
