It is your first day at Monster Hunters Academy, but things are already going haywire! A villainous masked man attacks the Academy with his clan of dangerous monsters and not even your mother, the great Professor Helen Lyngren can take him down. It is now up to you to unravel the identity of this masked man and save the Academy in Spirit Legends: Time for Change!
Spirit Legends: Time for Change is the third game in Domini Games’ Spirit Legends series. So far, this rather recent hidden object adventure series has not established an identifiable footprint in the genre and with Time for Change, the series continues to struggle to find its voice. The concept of an elitist academy has been done before by games such as Queen’s Quest III: End of Dawn and monsters elements are definitely far from unique. thus, this game feels like a random mishap of different ideas and themes, failing to deliver a singular, focused vision.
To make matters worse, Spirit Legends: Time for Change’s gameplay is also sub-par. While I certainly appreciate the developer’s efforts to bring some new ideas to the mundane interactive tasks, not all of the ideas land. Many of the tasks are illogical and absurd, as opposed to smart and imaginative. With minimal believability, adult players might find it difficult to be totally immersed in the game. Still, other aspects of the gameplay are serviceable. The hidden object scenes and the puzzles are enjoyable and the Beastiary Book gadget is not overly-distracting.
All that being said, Spirit Legends: Time for Change is not all bad as its production is excellent. The locations in the game are all brilliantly designed and polished. The color balance is perfect, the special effects are superb, and the cutscenes are stunning as well. As for the audio, there is also a lot to enjoy. The well-composed soundtracks rise and fall at precise moments and the voice-overs effectively add some personality to the characters.
Spirit Legends: Time for Change Collector’s Edition comes with a 50-minute bonus chapter, a strategy guide, wallpapers, soundtracks, concept art, cutscenes, replayable hidden object scenes, replayable puzzles, achievements, collectibles, morphing objects, and a customizable office.
