The first Runefall game was one of my favorite Match 3 games of all-time for multiple reasons. It gave the much-familiar Match 3 genre a creative spin, it was visually and audibly pleasing, and most importantly, it was wildly entertaining. Fans around the world waited four years for this sequel, The Rivermoor gang is back for another grand adventure when the magical runes got stolen! Join them on a trip across the kingdom of Silverdale in the long-awaited Runefall 2.
In the veins of other acclaimed hybrid Match 3 games from Playcademy (SpelunKing and Silver Tale to name a few), Runefall 2 is more than just your standard Match 3 game. Each level is an expansive map that allows the user to explore. The board moves in the direction of the match made and various objectives that are required to complete each level are scattered throughout the map. This map exploration aspect of the game is certainly fun, especially for fans who look for an extra layer of challenge from the mostly static Match 3 genre.
However, this also has the potential to backfire as the game progresses and the level map becomes larger. The standard game includes 48 main levels, many levels with maps so genuinely huge that they require more than an hour to complete. This was also somewhat a problem with the original Runefall and Playcademy is smart enough to include a save feature this time around. Instead of having to sit through each level in one sitting, this sequel allows you to save the progress and continue at another time – surely an incredibly useful and practical feature.
With a large focus on Match 3 gameplay, Runefall 2 will undeniably feel repetitive and tedious to some. That being said, the game introduces additional features to add some variety to the game to great effects. This includes a hefty storyline that is told through entertaining and well-voiced character dialogues (they are extensive but skippable) and story-driven side-tasks that require the collection of inventory items. Even the Match 3 game mechanics are innovative and interesting. Apart from the regular power-ups, the Match 3 levels also allow you to gain more resources through matching tiles in a certain sequence or jump to any point on the map when the bar is fully reloaded.
Moreover, Runefall 2 also delivers some impressive visuals. The game’s vibrant graphics help maintain the high energy of the game throughout all its levels, the visual effects are minimal yet effective, and the melodic soundtracks are pleasant and not distracting. As a Collector’s Edition, Runefall 2 is packed with extras. The bonus section includes a strategy guide, 25 bonus levels, wallpapers, soundtracks, and a special look behind the scenes of the game.
Runefall 2 is as hardcore as a Match 3 game can be, which also makes it one of the most complex and entertaining Match 3 games in recent years.
