Halloween Stories: Horror Movie introduces the third installment of Elephant Games’ annual Halloween-themed HOPA series. In this chapter, you need to help Ellie find and rescue her three friends who got transported into the television screen while they were watching a horror movie on a Halloween night two years ago!
At this point, the HOPA genre has clearly overdone the getting-sucked-into-a-movie storyline. In 2019 alone, we have gotten this similar storyline in popular releases like Fright Chasers and …. The main plotline of Halloween Stories: Horror Movie goes along the same line. However, what makes the game interesting is that it diverges into three different horror movie worlds where you need to go and rescue the lost characters. This constant switch up in storyline and environment adds some nice variety to the game and although they are all campy B-movies, they are such fun to explore.
The delightful campiness of Halloween Stories: Horror Movie is further highlighted by the game’s visual design. The game’s dark color palette is contrasted by a scatter of luminous Halloween-themed decor here and there. meanwhile, the haunting music adds a layer of intrigue to the game. Fans of Elephant Games probably know by now what to expect in terms of the game’s production quality and this latest release certainly does not disappoint.
Halloween Stories: Horror Movie does not offer much of a challenge for advanced HOPA players, but its well-engineered gameplay is still quite enjoyable. When it comes to hidden object scenes and puzzles, the majority of them are the same-old with few creative elements. Despite that, the playful Halloween elements make the game an all-around amusing experience with lots to do and see in each scene.
With a concise three and a half hours runtime, Halloween Stories: Horror Movie does not overstay its welcome. The Collector’s Edition is also available for those who want more, as it comes with a solid 50-minute bonus chapter. Other extra features include a strategy guide, wallpapers, concept art, soundtracks, achievements, collectibles, morphing objects, replayable hidden object scenes and puzzles, and posters.
