A young artist recently moved to Paris, the City of Love, to find new inspirations for his art. He quickly made a romantic connection with Sasha, a beautiful Parisian girl. One night, while he was painting Sasha’s portrait, he received an unexpected visit from the Paris police force. Just as he was about to answer the door, Sasha mysteriously disappeared from the hotel room. Cateia Games presents The Man with the Ivory Cane, a new adventure in the world of art and deception.
Adventure games from Caetia Games have always been hit or miss for me, so I entered this game with caution. I am glad to report that The Man with the Ivory Cane hooked me right in from the very first minute. The rich and well-paced storyline is accompanied by realistic characters and brilliant storytelling. The game also pays a visit to a variety of locations across Paris and the constant switch up in environment really does wonders.
The Man with the Ivory Cane is a casual adventure game, which means that it features zero hidden object scenes. This allows the storyline to really shine, through creative action sequences and whatnot. Nonetheless, the main gameplay mechanics feel familiar and not much different from that of a typical HOPA game. The puzzles are cleverly tied into the storyline but are often quick and easy to solve. Furthermore, the game also offers only three difficulty levels with no custom mode – even on the hardest mode, the game is not much of a challenge.
Another area where The Man with the Ivory Cane genuinely impresses is the production. This game looks and sounds fantastic. All the scenes are exquisitely drawn and painted, the lighting is on-point, and the animations are superb. Every single scene looks like a piece of art that deserves to be appreciated. The audio elements are also perfect, from the soundtracks to the voice-overs.
Unfortunately, the fun does not last for long. The Man with the Ivory Cane is a very short game, coming in at around two and a half hours. Still, with the Standard Edition’s price tag, the game was well worth every cent. With this game as the standard, I look forward to more memorable, sophisticated projects from Cateia Games in the near future.
