I kinda of already gave up on the Spirits of Mystery series for it kept disappointing even my lowest expectations installment after installment. To my surprise, I actually found myself fairly intrigued by this twelfth sequel. The storyline is not necessarily groundbreaking, but it is certainly more focused than the series has ever been in quite some time. The hefty backstory makes for an engaging premise for the game and the ubiquity of action sequences certainly helps.
Spirits of Mystery: Whisper of the Past delivers in terms of its production, although not the best we have seen from this developer. The scene designs remain pretty basic, but with enough interesting details to keep me captivated. Additionally, the well-crafted animations and cutscenes are also effective at maintaining the sense of suspense and urgency. Spirits of Mystery: Whisper of the Past also features some amazing musical scores and voice-overs, which adds to the experience of the game.
One aspect that Spirits of Mystery: Whisper of the Past stays on par with its lackluster predecessors is the gameplay. The gameplay is void of any slight hint of challenge, the hidden object scenes are mundane, and the puzzles are uninspired. The magical lens gadget that AMAX Interactive keeps including in these Spirits of Mystery games is still a dull and lazy idea, an unnecessary distraction.
Spirits of Mystery: Whisper of the Past took me over four hours to complete and the bonus chapter took me another hour, so at least the game makes up with its above average length. The Collector’s Edition includes a strategy guide, wallpapers, concept art, screensavers, soundtracks, videos, replayable hidden object scenes, replayable puzzles, achievements, collectibles, and morphing objects.
Spirits of Mystery: Whisper of the Past is miles more entertaining than the past few sequels, but that still does not make it a great game.
