Your twin brother Reggie disappeared into thin air years ago, so you anticipated a meeting with an anonymous source who sent you a letter about Reggie’s possible whereabouts. Unbeknownst to you, this quick visit to your childhood home will get you involved in an intergalactic conspiracy. Is Reggie still alive and can you save him and the world from The Contagion’s planned Earth invasion?
Usually a series dips slightly in terms of quality when it comes to the third installment, but Beyond defies that trend. Beyond: The Fading Signal continues to deliver extremely intriguing science fiction tale about aliens, spaceships, and high-tech inventions. The characters are often multilayered and thus, able to connect with the player at an emotional level. Keeping up with Mad Head Games’ standards, the storytelling in this game is fast-paced and impeccable as always.
Beyond: The Fading Signal hits every mark when it comes to the visuals. The scene design, the artwork, the colors, the animations, and the cutscenes are nothing short of outstanding. The outer-space scenes are especially worth highlighting, as they are often unique and always gorgeous. In contrast, the sound elements are not flawless. While the soundtracks complement the game well and are satisfyingly epic, the voice-overs are slightly choppy. The voice-overs are either overly-dramatic or strangely flat, there is no in between.
On the gameplay side, the game mechanics in Beyond: The Fading Signal work in conjunction with each other wonderfully. Everything flows together so smoothly that the whole game quite literally flies by. Still, there is no hiding the fact that challenge is lacking in this game. Advanced players will find the hidden object scenes and the puzzles to be overly-simple and the majority of the adventure portion to be quite predictable.
Regardless, Beyond: The Fading Signal is entertaining through and through. The main chapter took us a=roughly four hours to complete, and the bonus chapter added another solid hour to the total length. The Collector’s Edition includes all the expected features and more; a strategy guide, wallpapers, concept art, soundtracks, replayable hidden object scenes, cover pictures, character profile icons, achievements, collectibles, morphing objects, and a treasure hunt mini-game.
Beyond: The Fading Signal’s excellent delivery and spectacular production design definitely offset its few flaws.
