Artifex Mundi can certainly be counted as one of the top Hidden Object Adventure developers as the studio has so far created countless number of top-quality, successful games. Nightmares from the Deep series began in 2012 where the first game, The Cursed Heart was a gigantic success and even got voted to be one of the Best Games of 2012! The sequel, The Siren’s Call has just released and seems to gain the same amount, if not more attention. We got in touch with Christopher Szaton, the producer of the game to talk more about the process behind this amazing game!
Since the first game was a huge success, do you feel any pressure from the players while developing this second game?
When creating new installments of games it is impossible to avoid comparisons. I wouldn’t call it pressure, though. Our players are like an additional member of the team. They motivate us to put forth greater effort by providing feedback and ideas. We all want to create the best game possible, and it’s something that binds the team together. We did everything in our power in order not to disappoint the expectations of the players. We hope that they will appreciate it.
What did you do in this sequel that is different from the first game?
In our latest game we focused on diversity. In addition to standard HO* scenes, we’ve included full-screen FROG** (the first part featured miniature FROG scenes) and IHO scenes. Also, the PC version now features Achievements,which were previously only available on mobile platforms. The number of Achievements has increased. You will also gain an ally, who will provideyou with advice and assistance from time to time. As suggested by players, we enriched the map with the teleport option. This makes it possible to move quickly between locations.
What is the biggest challenge you faced when you developing the game?
Time. The greatest challenge when developing a game is to implement as many good ideas as possible while meeting deadlines.
You have included many collectibles in this game, do you feel like Collectibles is an important feature?
We believe that Collectibles make the adventure more attractive. They are a cool addition. We had a lot of great ideas regarding them, and couldn’t decide which ones to implement. So we included all of them! Nightmares from the Deep: The Siren’s Call features three types of Collectibles. In order to find them all you need to be perceptive, inquisitive and have a good memory.
What do you think is the most important aspect or feature of a HOPA game?
Without question, one of the most important advantages of HOPA games is the fact that almost everyone can play them and spend as much time in-game as they wish in a given moment. There are many games like that, so the choice is huge. These are not the kind of games that require lots of compounding actions or practice.Plus, they usually do not require you to have 11 fingers to play and enjoy. HOPA games are supposed to be relaxing. Most often they feature an interesting plot and intriguing riddles.
What’s more, you don’t need the latest hardware to run them and currently you can also play HOPA titles on mobile devices.
Is it necessary for the players to play the first game before playing this sequel?
No, it’s not necessary. A short summary of the first part is presented at the beginning ofNftD: The Siren’s Call. Still, we encourage you to check out the first NftD in order to discover how it all began. When the second installment is released you can surely expect to get The Cursed Heart for a discounted price. It will be a good opportunity to complete your game collection!
Can we expect the third Nightmares from the Deep game? And if there are any upcoming projects you would like to share with the readers?
We are thinking about the third installment. Some motifs in Nightmares from the Deep still need to be clarified. We have so many ideas we can certainly fill another game with them!
